A portable stage show
Two singers enter as experts. Within minutes they are arguing about wine, mistranslating opera, dispensing romantic advice and recruiting unsuspecting audience members into the story. Experts on Everything is a portable comedy show for anyone who knows everything, nothing, or simply loves a night without boring bits.
The show opens with two sommeliers disputing the title, the tasting process and who knows what they are doing. She takes wine seriously. He has less of a clue, yet confidently serenades a woman in the audience with his theory that chardonnay is more than wine: it is opera.
La donna è mobile becomes an English lesson about how women resemble wine. Carmen's Habanera answers with a translation all about men. When an apparent ex-lover is discovered in the audience, the experts' advice on dating and romance becomes increasingly personal.
A larger-than-life Pavarotti arrives in an inflatable suit to sing about his women, spaghetti and the tax man. The audience then joins an exuberant Drinking Song from La Traviata to close the first half.
After interval, The Phantom of the Opera is turned sideways. Christine cannot find her lover, so an audience member is cast in the role. A jealous Phantom challenges him to a duel, a comic battle unfolds and the famous riff gives way to a surprising burst of acrobatics.
The mix of opera, theatre, stand-up instincts and audience participation has worked everywhere from the Tecoma Football Club to the NGV ballroom. Theatre devotees enjoy the music. First-time opera audiences enjoy the comedy. Even the partner who was dragged along tends to be won over.
